Japanese Cotton Tenugui: Takumi Indigo Letters
This is a precut long piece of 100% cotton, made in Japan, called a tenugui. Tenugui translates to "hand towel" but is much more than that. It's a piece of cotton fabric, approximately 14" x 36", that can indeed be hemmed and used as a hand towel or tea towel, but also can be quilted, sewn into clothing or other textile goods, or displayed as art. This Takumi (master artisan) design features Japanese hiragana phonetic script, mixed up between forward and backward-facing symbols. It comes from Kurashiki, a beautifully preserved folk village in Okayama Prefecture, Japan.
I purchased these tenugui in Japan and hope you love them as much as I do! This one features beautiful indigo-and-white contrast and would look beautiful hung simply on its own, or combined with other fabrics. The dye permeates the fabric so it looks great on both sides.
PLEASE NOTE: This is not yardage, it's sold as a single piece. This one is about 14" x 36"
For scale, the vertical photo shows the whole design.
NOTE #2: If you are going to use this with other fabrics, please wash it first! Wash by hand in cold water, do not leave to soak. Hang dry only. Irons well.
